Together with the Port of Stockholm, an application for EU funds

16.02.2024

At the end of January 2024, the Freeport of Riga Authority together with its partners - the Port of Stockholm and Riga Ropax Terminal Ltd - submitted an application for CEF (Connecting Europe Facility) funding. The application aims at ensuring sustainable and multimodal mobility in both the Port of Riga and the Port of Stockholm.

As part of the application, the Riga Freeport Authority is seeking funding for the dismantling of the ED dam and the dredging of the turnaround basin, which will ensure safer navigation in the future in the Export Port area and allow for  docking larger passenger and cruise ships in the Ropax Terminal area.

The Port of Stockholm plans to attract European funding to improve the port's infrastructure for shore-side electricity supply. One of the berths is planned to be retrofitted with shore-side power - the ability to run ships on electricity instead of fuel. As a result, negative environmental impacts would be reduced.

The Ropax section of the application focuses on the detailed design of the Ropax terminal building and adjacent area. In particular, an architectural call for proposals for the Ropax terminal was launched on 18 December 2023, with a deadline of 25 March 2024. After the end of the design competition, it is planned to conclude a design contract with the winner of the competition for the detailed construction design. This will be the next step in the design of the Ropax terminal.

The total amount of the application is almost €7.5 million, with the European Union co-financing 50% of the total cost if the application is successful
